Dates & LocationNovember 10-12, 2008 Conference CoordinatorsIsaac Goldstein Alicia Kuroiwa Conference Sponsors & CollaboratorsTwenty years have passed since the First International Symposium on the Spectacled Bear was held in Chicago. The first symposium became an important source of information about bear research and conservation both in situ and ex situ, and was an important platform upon which many productive alliances for bear conservation were made. Those partnerships and collaborations generated much of the new information now available on the Andean bear. A second symposium will enable the gathering and synthesis of previously collected information, the assessment of current information and conservation needs, and the development of new collaborations and partnerships for Andean bear conservation both in situ and ex situ. We, the organizers and supporters of the Second International Symposium on the Andean bear, invite all the people interested in the research and conservation of the Andean bear to participate at this event. Call for PapersPapers on all aspects of Andean bear biology, conservation, and management both in situ and ex situ are now being accepted. Resumes and full papers can be submitted to: Alicia Kuroiwa. Authors must submit summaries, not abstracts, of their proposed presentations. Summaries must be typed on Spanish or English, be no longer than 2 pages (single spaced, times new roman 12), and include name, institutional affiliations, address, and email of principal author. Please see sample at www.bearbiology.com. Summaries of proposed full length papers to be published at the Symposium Proceedings will be first choice. Summaries are due by August 15, 2008. Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by September 15, 2008. Proposed ActivitiesAn Andean bear symposium held in the southern Andean region will draw participants from both within and outside South America. This will address the interests and needs of all participants, including those working with wild bear populations and captive bears. Oral presenters will have to submit abstracts and, if chosen to present, will be expected to provide manuscripts of their presentations; summaries will be evaluated by the Proceedings Committee for scientific merit and relevance. The schedule will include plenary sessions for oral presentations in the morning and early afternoon each day, followed by concurrent workshops focused on topics of interest to different groups. Invited speakers will facilitate discussions and workshops. Possible workshop topics include: new methodologies in bear research, conservation of fragmented populations, new management practices for wild populations. Evenings will have open schedules to encourage informal communication among participants, and to foster new projects and alliances. Workshops and MeetingsSix workshops will be held during the 3 day symposium. We invite proposed workshop topics of interest. Persons or professional groups who wish to schedule meetings during the symposium please contact Alicia Kuroiwa at ibah@terra.com.pe before September 01, 2008.
