Thank you for a successful 18th International Conference on Bear Research & Management!Post-conference InformationIn the U.S.: Diana Doan-Crider, (361) 595-4292; PO Box 775, Kingsville, TX 78363. LocationMonterrey, Mexico, was chosen as the site for the 18th International Conference on Bear Research and Management, held between November 4-10, 2007. The IBA conference coincided with UNESCO’s Forum of Cultures, which continues until December, 2007. Though Monterrey is Mexico’s 3rd largest city, it is beautifully situated at the head of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain chain. Monterrey is located only 2 hours south of the U.S. border, and rests in the Tamaulipan thornscrub/Chihuahuan desert at approximately 800 m above sea level. The Sierra Madre dramatically rises up to pine/oak forests at 2000 m within 1 mile of the city’s edge. Conference Overview
The conference covered all 8 bear species, and hosted representation from 26 countries. The program contained over 55 oral presentations and 88 posters. Several important workshops were held on topics such as Population Monitoring and Estimation using DNA Analysis, Conflict Management in Mexico, and bear viewing. Events were hosted for Student Activities, including a Silent Auction of bear-related arts & crafts that benefitted the Student Forum. A special evening was open to the public, and included presentations about bear conservation in British Columbia, bears and culture, and polar bears. Other important related meetings included the IBA Council Elections, and the Bear Specialist Group meetings. AcknowledgementsThe IBA conferences have always left a significant impact on the regions in which they are held. We believe that the 18th International Conference on Bear Research & Management was a landmark event for establishing international collaboration within North & South America, serves as a launching pad for bear management in Mexico, and follows the example of our many other IBA conferences to unify all of those interested in conserving bears worldwide.
