Alexandros A. Karamanlidis
Councillor Candidate 2018-2020 Term
I‘ve been a passionate wildlife conservationist for the past 15 years, working mainly with endangered species, such as the Mediterranean monk seal in my native Greece; for my contribution to the recovery of this rare species I have been awarded the 2017 Conservation Merit Prize of the Society of Marine Mammalogy. I became a member of the IBA family in 2004 while attending the conference in San Diego and since then I have been committed to IBA and its goal to expand effective bear conservation around the world: I’ve been active in the IBA student organization, a Council member (2010 – 2012), participated in several Committees and had the honor of organizing the 23rd IBA Conference. I currently work as the scientific coordinator of the NGO ARCTUROS and serve on the European Brown Bear and Human-Bear Conflicts Expert Teams.
My professional development has benefited greatly from my involvement in IBA and I would be honored to be able to give back. I believe that my experience in international wildlife conservation and dealing with complex conservation and management issues will help me guarantee a strong future for IBA. As a member of the IBA Council, I will continue to promote, in cooperation with the BSGs, IBA’s principal goal, the science-based management and conservation of all bear species and work to increase IBA’s role as the world’s most audible voice in the conservation world. While doing this I will strive to create more volunteer opportunities for IBA members, especially students.
