Candidate Statement - Marion Schneider

Marion Schneider

Councillor Candidate 2018-2020 Term

I am a behavioural biologist and have studied bears for 16 years. I conducted my diploma thesis on foraging behaviour in sun bears. The subject of my dissertation was autonomic and behavioural thermoregulation in polar bears and sun bears. In 2015, I joined the NGO Free the Bears, when I was employed as research and education coordinator at the Cat Tien Bear Rescue Centre in Vietnam. This role involved the design and implementation of a research project monitoring behavioural and physiological indicators of stress in sun bears and Asiatic black bears as well as supporting other aspects of the programme including surveying of wild bear populations within Cat Tien National Park and building capacity for environmental education.

Due to the participation in IBA conferences over the past 12 years, I was able to gain extensive experience in bear research and conservation and became more involved in the work of the IBA. Since 2014, I volunteer for the International Bear News and since 2016, I am a member of the IBA Travel Grants Committee. This year I joined the IUCN / SSC Bear Specialist Group. I have learned so much through the remarkable network IBA has established and would very much appreciate the opportunity to serve as a councillor and thereby contribute to the valuable input IBA provides to its members. I believe, with my experience and expertise, I would be able to help advance our objective of gaining a broader understanding of bears and their conservation needs.
