Candidate Statement - Agnieszka Sergiel

Agnieszka Sergiel

Councillor Candidate 2018-2020 Term

I have been working with bears since 2002 and captive bears and stress are of my main scientific interest. The first IBA conference I attended was in 2007 in Monterrey. I have been immediately drawn to the amazing people and organization and I have been a member and attended every conference since. In 2009 I was invited to join the BSG European Brown Bear Expert Team. Then in 2010 and 2011 I co-organized captive bears workshops in Georgia and Canada, got involved with the students’ presentations on a conference in Utah in 2013 and stayed with the team since. At the end of 2013 I started preparing the Recent Bear Literature section for International Bear News when asked to team up with an incredible team and good friends of mine from various continents and countries.

The IBA is vital in the conservation of bears worldwide. The issue is complex and challenging, and requires a variety of expertise. I believe I can add welfare-oriented myself to it for the benefit of the organization and bears.

I am being continuously amazed by the long-term success of IBA in reaching its original goal - internationality. On a way to reflect this diversity in the Council, I hope to represent Poland (which has never had a representative before) but also female bear biologists coming into the world of IBA. The IBA has recently declared the gender equality in the bylaws so let’s all vote together to make it true.
